About Skjærgaarden

About the Kennel

Our journey started in 1986, when we got our first leonberger from Ullvik in Hardanger. In 1989 our interest in breeding started growing, and the same year the kennel name was registered with the FCI. Over the years, the Skjærgaarden family has grown a lot and spread all over the world.

Residence

Our dogs live with us near the Kristiansand archipelago on a 10-acre property where they have plenty of space to play and relax. They are surrounded by nature, with both the sea and forest as their closest neighbors. This environment offers them a peaceful and spacious place to enjoy their days, with the freedom to explore and have fun in a beautiful coastal and natural setting.

History / Breeding

November 18th 1989 marks the anniversary of the birth of our first puppies. The first litter was named "Skjærgaardens Li-sa (...)". The parents of our first litter were named Ragnarikets Lillemann Lejonhufvud and Saldeana.

Skjærgaarden Kennel have exported dogs to the following countries:

Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Italy, Belgium, Slovenia, Croatia, Lithuania, England, Russia, Spain, Estonia, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Portugal, France, Romania, Luxembourg, San Marino, Switzerland, Hungary, USA, Canada, Belarus, South Africa and Hungary.

In 1991, Skjærgaarden Kennel, c/o Tone Mosby, assisted in establishing a dedicated club for the leonberger breed in Norway, the Norwegian Leonberger Club (NLBK).

Exhibition / Merits

Our dogs are well-known across many parts of the world, and over the years, we have received significant recognition at numerous exhibitions. This success would not have been possible without the dedication and skill of our committed puppy buyers. As a result, Skjærgaarden is proudly represented at many international exhibitions. Over time, Skjærgaarden Kennel has earned several titles in various countries, including international championships, European, and World Winner titles.

Awards

In 2014 we were awarded the Norwegian Kennel Club's Breeder's Award

"The Breeder's Award may be granted to an individual who can demonstrate their own breeding of pedigree dogs with exceptional quality. The breeding program should, in its entirety, reflect the breeder's ability to successfully breed dogs of very high quality—taking into account the breed's conformation and working traits."

The same year we also received the Italian "Millennium Leonberger Award" from Club Italiano del Leonberger.

"Fore being and having been one of the leader breeders in Europe
looking for the right blend of a show and a technical approach".
